Humayun Kabir Renames His Party After ECI's Rejection
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 2 (NationPress) Humayun Kabir, the suspended Trinamool Congress MLA representing the Bharatpur Assembly in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district of West Bengal, has officially revised the name of his newly established political party following the rejection of his initial proposal by the Election Commission of India (ECI).
The name he initially proposed was 'Janata Unnayan Party (JUP)'. However, due to the ECI's disapproval, he opted to rename his party to 'Amm Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP)'.
On Monday, Kabir elaborated on the reasons behind the ECI's rejection of the original name, urging the need for an alternative designation.
“Last week, the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal submitted a formal recommendation to the ECI headquarters in New Delhi for the registration of JUP. Subsequently, the ECI informed me that a party with that name is already registered. My representatives and I then traveled to Delhi to discuss the proposed new name of AJUP with the Commission,” Kabir stated.
He expressed optimism about successfully registering his party with the Commission. “We are still extending our call to all anti-Trinamool Congress and anti-BJP factions, though we are confident about contesting the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections on our own merit. We are determined to mobilize and unite our efforts to remove the current ruling party from power in the state. We will prevail,” he affirmed.
Humayun Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress shortly after announcing the foundation stone-laying ceremony for a proposed mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad, designed to reflect the architectural style of the original Babri Masjid structure in Ayodhya, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
On December 22, 2025, Humayun Kabir officially declared the name of his political party, Janata Unnayan Party, along with the names of key office-bearers.
During that announcement, he also introduced several prospective candidates who are expected to contest the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
Furthermore, Humayun Kabir made a public appeal for alliances with political parties and groups opposing both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in light of the approaching elections.
However, aside from initial conversations with Asaduddin Owaisi's All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), his attempts to forge broader political coalitions have seen limited progress, as per sources.
