Humayun Kabir to Run for Two Seats in Bengal Assembly Elections
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 18 (NationPress) The suspended Trinamool Congress legislator and current Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Humayun Kabir, who has recently established his own political entity, is set to contest from two different Assembly seats in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district during the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections next month.
Unlike his previous stint, he will not be running from the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in Murshidabad, a seat he won in 2021. Instead, he is focusing on Rejinagar and Naoda Assembly constituencies as a candidate for the Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party (AAUP), the new political organization he founded.
Initially, there was speculation that Kabir might contest from the Beldanga Assembly constituency, where the Babri Mosque, a project he initiated, is under construction. However, during a recent announcement of AAUP candidates, he confirmed his decision to contest from Rejinagar and Naoda.
“I aim to teach the Trinamool Congress a lesson by contesting from Rejinagar and Naoda,” Kabir declared while presenting some of his party's candidates.
For Beldanga, the AAUP has nominated state president Syed Ahmed Kabir.
Reports indicate that several sitting Trinamool Congress legislators from the minority-influenced Murshidabad and the nearby Malda district, who have been denied re-nomination, have approached Kabir expressing their intent to join the AAUP.
“My sole objective is to send a clear message to the Trinamool Congress. A new strategy is in place, and I am in constant communication with a discontented Trinamool Congress leader,” Kabir stated on Wednesday.
Kabir was expelled from the party shortly after he announced the construction of the Babri Mosque at Beldanga, which mirrors the original structure from Ayodhya, demolished on December 6, 1992. Following this, he declared the formation of his party. He has also publicly sought alliances with political factions opposed to both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress in anticipation of the upcoming Assembly elections.
However, apart from initial dialogues with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), his attempts to create a wider political coalition have yet to yield substantial results.
