Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, February 25 (NationPress) - The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal has formally recommended to the Election Commission of India (ECI) in Delhi the registration of the Janata Unnayan Party (JUP), a new political entity established by Humayun Kabir, a suspended legislator from the Trinamool Congress representing the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in the minority-majority region of Murshidabad district, West Bengal.
As per information from the CEO’s office, Humayun Kabir submitted his application for party registration within the required timeframe and adhered to the established procedures mandated by the Election Commission of India.
According to an insider from the CEO’s office, “Kabir’s application for the registration of his political party was submitted promptly. After a comprehensive review and validation of the credentials and accompanying documentation, the CEO's office has recommended the party's registration to the Election Commission of India.
It is anticipated that his party will receive registration and a symbol allotment soon, enabling them to field candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections scheduled for later this year,” the insider noted.
The source further mentioned that Humayun Kabir could obtain formal approval for his party’s registration from the Election Commission of India within the next 15 days, contingent on fulfilling the necessary procedural requirements at the Commission's end.
“He has yet to submit a formal request for an election symbol, which can be done following the registration of his party by the Election Commission,” added the CEO’s office source.
Humayun Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress shortly after he announced plans for a mosque's foundation stone laying ceremony in Beldanga, Murshidabad district, designed to emulate the original Babri Masjid structure demolished on December 6, 1992.
On December 22, he officially unveiled his new political party's name, Janata Unnayan Party, along with key office-bearers and some prospective candidates for the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
Additionally, Humayun Kabir has publicly called for alliances with political entities opposed to both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Trinamool Congress in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections.
However, aside from initial talks with the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), founded by Asaduddin Owaisi, his attempts to establish broader political coalitions have not progressed significantly, sources revealed.
