Election Commission Approves Initial Registration for Humayun Kabir's New Political Party
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, March 4 (NationPress) Humayun Kabir, the suspended Trinamool Congress member representing the Bharatpur Assembly constituency in the minority-heavy Murshidabad district of West Bengal, announced on Wednesday that he has received initial approval from the Election Commission of India (ECI) for his newly established political party.
The political entity is named the Aam Janata Unnyaan Party (AJUP). This party aims to contest in multiple Assembly constituencies across West Bengal during the pivotal Assembly elections set for later this year.
Initially, Kabir proposed the name Janata Unnyaan Party (JUP) to the ECI. The Chief Electoral Officer's (CEO) office in West Bengal had even recommended this name to the Commission's headquarters in New Delhi for approval.
However, the Commission later suggested that Kabir modify the party's name, as a similar political party already existed. Consequently, Kabir rebranded his party as Aam Janata Unnyaan Party (AJUP).
Although initial clearance has been granted, the party will require additional time before obtaining its final and official registration.
As part of the next steps, public notices will need to be published in newspapers to inform the public about the proposed registration of the new political party.
If there are no objections within the specified timeframe, the final registration will be approved.
A source within the Commission indicated that barring any complications, AJUP's final registration could be confirmed within two weeks.
Humayun Kabir was suspended from the Trinamool Congress shortly after he announced plans for a foundation stone-laying ceremony for a new mosque in Beldanga, Murshidabad district.
He mentioned that the mosque's design would reflect the architectural style of the original Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, which was demolished on December 6, 1992.
On December 22, 2025, Kabir formally declared the formation of his political party—initially called Janata Unnayan Party—and unveiled the names of its key office-bearers.
During this announcement, he also revealed several potential candidates for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections.
Kabir publicly called for alliances with political factions and groups opposing both the BJP and the Trinamool Congress ahead of the elections.
However, apart from preliminary talks with Asaduddin Owaisi’s All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), his attempts to establish broader political alliances have seen limited success, according to sources.
