Bengaluru, Dec 30 (NationPress) - In light of the controversy surrounding the Karnataka government's decision regarding the rehabilitation of encroachers in Bengaluru, Deputy Chief Minister and State Congress President D.K. Shivakumar firmly stated on Tuesday that the government would not be extending any 'gifts' to encroachers, emphasizing that it is not engaging in appeasement politics.
Shivakumar made these remarks during a media interaction in Bengaluru. He reiterated that the Karnataka government would not support illegal land encroachments or offer 'gifts' to individuals who have unlawfully occupied government property.
“Illegal encroachments should not happen. We will not be giving any 'gifts' to encroachers. There is absolutely no room for appeasement politics in this regard,” he stated.
In response to accusations from the Opposition claiming that the government is favoring Muslims, Shivakumar clarified, “We are not favoring any group. Appropriate legal measures will be taken against those involved in encroachments. Residents have reported that some individuals have solicited money. From a humanitarian standpoint, housing will only be allocated under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana to those who qualify.”
He mentioned that there were claims of ownership documents being issued in certain areas previously and has instructed officials to verify these claims.
“It has come to our attention that newcomers have also settled in these areas. Following a thorough examination of records to ascertain the number of legitimate voters, rehabilitation will be granted accordingly,” the Deputy Chief Minister explained.
When questioned about certain Kerala MPs' objections to statements regarding their interference in Karnataka's matters, Shivakumar responded, “Our government is functioning effectively. They can voice their opinions, but we will not permit illegal encroachments. They have failed to honor previous commitments, especially concerning flood relief in their state. Such individuals should refrain from advising us; we are capable of managing our own affairs.”
Regarding comments made by Pakistan's Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar concerning the Kogilu demolition issue, Shivakumar mentioned, “Senior political figures in the country will address that.”
Concerning reports of some affected individuals possessing Aadhaar cards and voter IDs from two distinct states, Shivakumar stated, “I am not aware of this. Officials will investigate the situation.”
When asked about earlier assurances that illegal occupants would not receive housing but are now being regularized, he clarified, “Housing will be allocated strictly to eligible individuals. Only those listed on the local voters’ list with a legitimate local address will be considered. There will be no regularization; only those deemed eligible will be identified.”
The Karnataka BJP has expressed discontent with the Congress-led government's decision to announce rehabilitation for encroachers in Bengaluru, claiming that this action was influenced by the AICC. They also indicated plans to discuss a potential protest at the party's core committee meeting on January 5.
