Bengaluru, Oct 1 (NationPress) The groundbreaking 'Shakti' free travel initiative for women, introduced by the Congress-led Karnataka government, has officially been acknowledged by the International Book of Records – World Record of Excellence, as per a statement released by the Karnataka State Road Transportation Corporation (KSRTC) on Wednesday.
According to the announcement, The Karnataka Government’s visionary women empowerment initiative, the 'Shakti' scheme, which allows women to travel for free on buses, has reached a significant global milestone. Having issued more than 500 crore free tickets to women, it has now earned recognition from the International Book of Records – World Record of Excellence.
The 'Shakti' scheme is already featured in the Golden Book of World Records, as stated.
Ramalinga Reddy, Karnataka's Minister for Transport and Muzrai, expressed sincere gratitude to all the officials, employees, and labor union leaders associated with the four State Road Transport Corporations for their roles in achieving this honor.
Minister Reddy emphasized that the 'Shakti' scheme has significantly empowered women in the state, enhancing their economic, social, and professional status. Its successful implementation across various states in India serves as a testament to its effectiveness.

The International Book of Records certificate states that KSRTC, Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), North West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWRTC), Kalyan Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), Minister Ramalinga Reddy, and the Government of Karnataka are the official record holders.
Additionally, the certificate indicates, "The world record for the highest number of bus rides taken by women via the free travel scheme in Karnataka (mass) was achieved by KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, KKRTC, Minister Ramalinga Reddy, and the Government of Karnataka on July 16, 2025, from Bengaluru (Karnataka), India. A total of 500 crore bus rides have been availed by women under the 'Shakti' scheme, which was launched on June 11, 2023, to promote women's empowerment, based on records up to July 16, 2025."
