New Delhi, March 28 (NationPress) Congress MP Karti Chidambaram met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday to address the escalating health and safety issues related to stray dogs. During the discussion, Chidambaram emphasized the urgency of the matter and proposed forming a National Task Force to deliver a comprehensive, humane, and scientific resolution while working in tandem with local authorities.
In a post shared on X, the Congress MP representing Sivaganga, and son of former finance minister P. Chidambaram, stated: "Met the Prime Minister today in his Parliament House office to bring to his attention the increasing health & safety risks posed by stray dogs. India has one of the largest populations of stray dogs globally, exceeding 6.2 crore stray dogs."
He pointed out that India is a significant source of rabies, which contributes to 36 percent of the global rabies-related fatalities.
Chidambaram further remarked: "Although the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023 were introduced, their implementation has fallen short. I expressed concerns about the inadequacies of the existing system, where local bodies are deprived of the resources, funding, and technology necessary to effectively address this issue."
Recognizing the necessity for prompt action, Chidambaram stated: "It is evident that immediate measures are required. I proposed the creation of a National Task Force to offer a holistic, humane, and scientific solution while closely collaborating with local bodies. Furthermore, dedicated shelter facilities and a long-term strategy must be established to confront this challenge."
