KTR predicts KCR comeback as Telangana CM and national politics force
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Friday, 23 October predicted that party chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) will return as Chief Minister of Telangana and emerge as a significant force in national politics. Rama Rao made the remarks while addressing a gathering of BRS leaders at the party's headquarters, Telangana Bhavan, in Hyderabad.
KTR's Pitch for a Third-Force Politics
'The day is fast approaching when KCR will play a pivotal role — not just in Telangana, but on the national stage as well,' Rama Rao told BRS functionaries. He argued that parties beyond the Indian National Congress (Congress) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are positioned to become consequential players in national politics, echoing an argument KCR had first advanced roughly four years ago.
'When KCR spoke of an alliance excluding both the Congress and the BJP four years ago, many failed to grasp his vision. Today, seeing the BJP pushing the nation into a crisis, and observing that the Congress lacks any alternative agenda, people have come to realise that what KCR said was the truth,' Rama Rao said.
Sharp Attacks on Congress and BJP
Rama Rao was pointed in his criticism of both national parties. On Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, he said: 'No matter how much effort Rahul Gandhi puts in, it is to no avail,' dismissing the opposition leader's national prospects. He also alleged that because the Congress 'failed the nation,' young people are now mobilising against the BJP under the banner of 'CJP.'
'It has become clear that while the BJP may be able to intimidate political leaders, it cannot suppress the youth. The BJP is currently at its weakest point in the last 10 years,' Rama Rao claimed — an assertion critics from the ruling party are likely to contest vigorously.
Telangana State Politics: Attacks on Revanth Reddy
Turning to state affairs, Rama Rao alleged that Congress and BJP Members of Parliament from Telangana are 'working in tandem,' with their 'sole focus' being attacks on KCR and himself rather than advancing the state's interests. He also accused Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and the Congress of lacking the 'courage' to hold MPTC, ZPTC, and municipal corporation elections in Telangana.
Rama Rao further alleged that the Congress party has deceived students, the unemployed, and youth through what he described as their 'so-called Youth Declaration.' These claims represent the BRS's continuing effort to frame itself as the authentic voice of Telangana's interests — a narrative the party has leaned on since losing power in the state.
Context: BRS After the 2023 Defeat
The BRS lost power in Telangana to the Congress in the December 2023 assembly elections, ending KCR's decade-long tenure as Chief Minister. Since then, the party has been rebuilding, and Friday's meeting signals an attempt to re-energise its cadre and recast KCR as a credible national alternative. Notably, the 'third front' narrative — positioning regional parties as a counterweight to both national parties — has been attempted several times in Indian politics with mixed results. Whether BRS can translate Rama Rao's confidence into electoral momentum remains to be seen.
