NASA astronaut Anil Menon reaches ISS; Kerala CM Satheesan salutes Palakkad-born spaceman
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
NASA astronaut Dr. Anil Menon, whose family roots trace to Ottapalam in Palakkad, Kerala, successfully docked at the International Space Station (ISS) on 15 July 2025, beginning an eight-month mission focused on scientific research and technology demonstrations. Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan congratulated Menon, saying the state salutes his dedication and wishes him and his crew a successful mission.
Journey to the Station
Menon lifted off alongside Roscosmos cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina at 10:47 a.m. EDT aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. The spacecraft completed a three-hour, two-orbit journey before docking with the ISS's Prichal module at 1:52 p.m. EDT. Their arrival brought the station's total crew count to 10 for approximately the next two weeks.
What Menon Said Before Launch
In posts on X ahead of liftoff, Menon expressed pride and gratitude. 'Proud to serve the United States Space Force and fly to the International Space Station today in support of NASA and our international partners!' he wrote. In a separate message, he added: 'Excited to launch aboard Soyuz MS-29 from Kazakhstan and begin an eight-month mission supporting NASA and Expedition 74/75. Grateful for the NASA community, friends, family, and loved ones and excited for tomorrow.'
Kerala CM's Congratulations
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan posted on X: 'Dr. Anil Menon, a NASA astronaut with roots in Ottapalam, Palakkad, has successfully entered the International Space Station (ISS) for an 8-month mission. As a doctor and flight engineer aboard the Soyuz MS-29, his stellar journey inspires us all. Keralam salutes his dedication and wishes him and his crew a successful mission.' The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM), where Menon holds board certification as an emergency physician, also extended congratulations on the successful launch.
Research Agenda Aboard the ISS
During his stay, which is scheduled to last until April 2027, Menon will pursue a wide-ranging scientific programme. His work includes refining the in-space production of semiconductor crystals — a process that could enable large-scale manufacturing of components for high-performance computers, artificial intelligence systems, and advanced medical devices. He will also perform ultrasound using augmented reality and AI methods that could reduce dependence on Earth-based medical support during future deep-space missions. Additionally, Menon will serve as a test subject in studies examining how blood flow changes in microgravity and will test bioprinting of vascular constructs to advance understanding of ageing and therapeutic development.
Mission Timeline and Crew Handover
The new arrivals were welcomed aboard by Expedition 74 crew members: NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams; European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot; and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergei Mikaev, and Andrey Fedyaev. Expedition 75 is scheduled to begin on 26 July following the departure of Williams, Kud-Sverchkov, and Mikaev. A change-of-command ceremony is planned for 25 July, when station command will transfer from Kud-Sverchkov to Meir. This is Menon's first spaceflight; it is the second mission for both Dubrov and Kikina. The ISS has maintained a continuous human presence for more than 25 years, serving as a unique laboratory for research in medicine, engineering, biology, and materials science.
