Kollam (Kerala), Sep 27 (NationPress) The Union Health Minister and BJP National President J.P. Nadda addressed the long-standing request for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Kerala during his recent visit to the state on Saturday.
During a speech at the BJP State Executive meeting in Thiruvananthapuram, J.P. Nadda recognized the aspirations of the state and assured that the central government is actively evaluating the proposal.
He stated, “The demand for an AIIMS in Kerala is acknowledged and will be announced at the right time, set up in the right location.”
J.P. Nadda emphasized that the Union government is dedicated to enhancing healthcare infrastructure nationwide, and Kerala's request is being taken seriously.
He highlighted that establishing such institutions aligns with the government's larger vision to improve medical education and healthcare services across the country.
The Kerala government has been advocating for an AIIMS in the state for years, pointing out the necessity for advanced medical research and quality healthcare services.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George reiterated this plea, urging the Centre to accelerate the decision-making process.
She stated, “The citizens of Kerala have waited long for an AIIMS, and we hope the Centre prioritizes this request.”
J.P. Nadda’s comments come amid ongoing discussions regarding the location and feasibility of the proposed AIIMS in Kerala.
While the state government has identified potential sites, including land in Kinalur, Kozhikode, the final decision lies with the Union government.
Interestingly, J.P. Nadda’s remarks coincide with Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi advocating for the AIIMS to be situated in Alappuzha district, emphasizing the district's inadequate healthcare infrastructure and the potential for the project to drive development.
Gopi further mentioned that if political obstacles hinder Alappuzha from hosting the institute, he would support its establishment in Thrissur, his Parliamentary constituency.
His comments have stirred controversy within the Kerala BJP, with many leaders distancing themselves, asserting that the official party stance is to allow the Centre to decide the AIIMS location based on established criteria, clarifying that Gopi’s comments reflect his personal opinion rather than the party’s position.
