Vijayapura (Karnataka), Sep 19 (NationPress) - The Karnataka Police have made significant strides in their investigation of the recent SBI bank robbery that occurred in Chadachana, Vijayapura district. The robbers made off with Rs 1.4 crore in cash and 20 kg of gold earlier this week. On Friday, officials announced the recovery of a bag containing 6.54 kg of gold and cash from a village in neighboring Maharashtra.
The Superintendent of Police (SP) of Vijayapura, Laxman Nimbargi, confirmed that the bag, which held a portion of the stolen gold and cash, was discovered in Hulajanti village, located in the Solapur district of Maharashtra.
The bag was located on the roof of a dilapidated structure in the village.
SP Nimbargi elaborated on the events leading to the recovery, stating, "The police department mobilized eight teams to investigate the SBI bank robbery that transpired on September 16. Three armed perpetrators intimidated bank personnel and customers before fleeing with Rs 1.4 crore in cash and 20 kg of gold. Our investigation is thorough and multifaceted."
"Within 90 minutes of the heist, we traced the getaway vehicle used by the criminals to Hulajanti. The car had been involved in an accident, during which one of the robbers had a dispute with local villagers, threatening them before escaping. Upon arrival, our team found 21 packets containing gold jewelry and Rs 1.3 lakh in cash inside the abandoned vehicle," the police officer added.
He continued, "Following this discovery, we intensified our investigation. In collaboration with the Solapur police, we set up barricades around the village to prevent the robbers from fleeing, initiating a search operation. On Thursday evening, we recovered a bag containing 6.54 kg of gold, neatly packed in 136 packets, along with nearly Rs 1.3 lakh in cash."
SP Nimbargi affirmed that the police teams are diligently working and are determined to apprehend the suspects soon.
Previously, authorities indicated that the robbers, armed with a homemade pistol, threatened both bank employees and customers, stealing cash and gold before escaping with their loot.
According to investigators, around 4 p.m. on September 16, one of the robbers, disguised with a mask, infiltrated the bank and waited for his accomplices to arrive.
It is suspected that he had been surveilling the bank for several days to assess its operations and identify vulnerabilities.
By around 6 p.m. on September 16, the gang executed their plan.
While two robbers stood guard outside, the others bound the hands and feet of both staff and customers within the bank before carrying out the robbery.
