Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 2 (NationPress) Andhra Pradesh's Minister for Human Resources Development, Nara Lokesh, accompanied by NDA MPs, met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to express appreciation for the successful passage of the Amaravati Bill in Parliament, which grants statutory recognition to Amaravati as the exclusive and permanent capital of the state.
As the general secretary of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Lokesh presented a shawl to the Prime Minister as a token of gratitude.
“Meeting the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji was a great honor. I relayed the heartfelt thanks of millions of people from Andhra Pradesh for the passage of the Amaravati Bill in Parliament,” Lokesh shared on ‘X’ following the meeting.
“I also highlighted the exceptional journey of our farmers—who have made tremendous sacrifices by pooling their lands and remaining steadfast amidst years of uncertainty—to keep the vision of Amaravati alive. I requested his ongoing support in honoring their sacrifices by transforming Amaravati into a truly world-class capital,” he added.
Later, Lokesh and the NDA MPs from the state also met with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to express their gratitude for his cooperation in passing the Bill.
Lokesh was joined by Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu, Minister of State for Rural Development Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani, and MPs from TDP, Jana Sena, and BJP.
“I had the pleasure of interacting with the NDA MPs earlier. It was delightful to meet our NDA MPs who stood steadfast for the state and our farmers as the Amaravati Bill progressed through both Houses of Parliament,” Lokesh posted on ‘X’.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2026 was approved by the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
The Bill is set for discussion in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, with expectations of unanimous approval in the Upper House.
Lokesh is currently in the national capital to observe the Rajya Sabha proceedings.
He is also expected to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, C.P. Radhakrishnan, to express the gratitude of the people of Andhra Pradesh.
The amendment proposed to Section 5 of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, substitutes the earlier wording of “a new capital” with “Amaravati shall be the new capital,” thereby firmly establishing Amaravati within the legal framework.
This legislative action follows the unanimous resolution passed by the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly on March 28, which facilitated the Bill's introduction in Parliament.
