Did a Man in MP's Singrauli Really Kill Two Neighbors Over Witchcraft Accusations?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Singrauli, Feb 12 (NationPress) A man, unable to become a father after his wife experienced a miscarriage, reportedly murdered two of his neighbors on Thursday, accusing them of engaging in witchcraft in the Singrauli district of Madhya Pradesh, according to police sources.
This disturbing incident took place in a remote village called Antarwa, within the jurisdiction of the Jeyawan police station.
The suspect, identified as Chhatrapati Singh, a member of the tribal community, was devastated by his inability to father a child.
Authorities stated that Chhatrapati believed his neighbors’ supposed witchcraft was the reason for his wife's miscarriage.
On the day of the incident, he hosted a prayer gathering at his residence, inviting his neighbors, including Kewal Singh and his spouse, Phulmati.
According to police reports, when Kewal and Phulmati arrived, Chhatrapati suddenly attacked them with an axe. Despite attempts by other neighbors to intervene, Chhatrapati violently assaulted them as well before locking himself in a room. Both Kewal and Phulmati succumbed to their injuries.
Upon learning of the attack, law enforcement promptly arrived at the scene, apprehending the suspect and launching an investigation into this horrifying act.
Investigators have revealed that the accused's wife had suffered a miscarriage prior to the incident.
“Chhatrapati suspected that his neighbors were involved in witchcraft, which he believed led to his wife's miscarriage and his inability to conceive. He lured them under the guise of a prayer for their deity and then committed the murders,” stated Singrauli Superintendent of Police (SP) Manish Khatri.
Khatri further noted that materials associated with the prayer were discovered at the crime scene, suggesting that the killings were linked to beliefs in witchcraft.
Additionally, police found a mud platform known as a 'chabutara' outside Chhatrapati's home, which he had intended to use for a puja two days before the incident.
Khatri emphasized that while it appears the crime was driven by faith in witchcraft, it also seems premeditated.
“We are conducting a comprehensive investigation. A forensic team has gathered essential evidence from the scene, and further inquiries are in progress,” he added.
