Kolkata, Jan 29 (NationPress) The Chief Minister of West Bengal expressed her sorrow regarding the tragic stampede at the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh earlier today, subtly indicating a deficiency in “planning and care” that led to this disaster.

She referenced the preparations undertaken by her administration for the annual Gangasagar Mela at Sahar Islands in the South 24 Parganas district, emphasizing the importance of meticulous organization for large gatherings.

“I am profoundly saddened by the tragic events at the Maha Kumbh that have resulted in the loss of at least 15 innocent lives. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the affected pilgrims. From our experience with the Gangasagar Mela, I have learned that planning and care must be prioritized when it comes to protecting pilgrims during large congregations. My prayers are with those who have passed,” stated the Chief Minister.

Political analysts suggest that her remarks carry implicit criticism of the BJP-led Uttar Pradesh government. However, many believe that comparing the crowd at Gangasagar Mela to that of the Maha Kumbh is not entirely valid.

Every year, prior to the Gangasagar Mela, the Chief Minister has criticized the Union government for not granting it National Fair status, a designation that Kumbh Mela enjoys.

She argues that the lack of this status leaves Gangasagar Mela without the financial support that is allocated for Kumbh Mela.

Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences regarding the stampede and mourned for the devotees who lost their lives.

On social media, PM Modi stated that local authorities were doing everything possible to assist the victims, and he was in ongoing communication with the state officials. “The incident at Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is deeply saddening. I extend my deepest sympathies to the families of the deceased. I also wish for a swift recovery for the injured. The local administration is doing everything it can to help the victims, and I have been in touch with Chief Minister Yogi ji,” he said (in Hindi).
