Nagpur, Dec 12 (NationPress) Maharashtra's Rural Development Minister Jaykumar Gore announced in the Assembly on Friday that the state is set to establish UMED Malls across 10 districts in the initial phase, aiming to create a lasting, year-round marketplace for products crafted by women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
In response to queries, Minister Gore confirmed the Cabinet's sanction of the 'UMED Mall' initiative.
He revealed that the government has allocated Rs 200 crore for the development of these malls, each District Sales Centre (UMED Mall) will cover at least 20,000 sq ft.
The Minister also indicated that there are plans to extend the mall scheme to the Taluka level in future phases. He highlighted that events such as 'Mahalakshmi Saras', District, and Mini Saras exhibitions, while serving as marketing platforms, are temporary solutions. The UMED Malls will fulfill the vital need for a consistent marketplace throughout the year.
Minister Gore reassured the Assembly that the UMED campaign will continue beyond 2026.
Furthermore, he addressed the requests made by Community Resource Persons (CRPs) and contractual personnel associated with the initiative.
“The proposal to reclassify CRPs as 'Gram Sakhi' (Village Friend) has been approved, and a Government Resolution (GR) on this will be issued today. The government will also provide uniforms for employees, with designs chosen by them and sanctioned by the government. While permanent employment for UMED staff isn't feasible in Maharashtra—unlike in other states—the government will evaluate concession models from states like Bihar for potential adoption,” Minister Gore added.
Emphasizing the extensive support for women’s SHGs, Minister Gore reported that Maharashtra boasts 6,53,192 active SHGs. The state has disbursed Rs 872 crore as revolving funds and Rs 222 crore as community funds to 3,70,350 groups. He noted that enhanced banking linkages have bolstered women-led entrepreneurship across the state.
He informed the assembly of ongoing discussions with Union Minister of Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chauhan, regarding the UMED initiative and announced a meeting with employee organizations within the next 15 days.
