Mumbai, July 4 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik announced on Friday that the state government has initiated a survey of the mangrove forests stretching from the Gujarat border to Goa.
This survey aims to determine the precise area covered by these vital ecosystems.
This announcement came in response to a query from Shiv Sena-UBT leader Bhaskar Jadhav during the Question Hour.
Minister Naik elaborated, "Instructions have been issued to install CCTV cameras for safeguarding the mangrove forests in the Palghar district. Additionally, it has been mandated that officials from the Forest, Revenue, and Home Departments conduct alternating patrols to ensure the protection of these forests. Any evidence of debris from Mumbai being dumped in the mangrove areas will lead to legal repercussions."
He further addressed concerns raised by BJP member Sneha Dube Pandit regarding the alarming rate of mangrove deforestation in Vasai and the surrounding regions of Palghar.
The Minister also revealed plans to file a review petition in the Supreme Court regarding the judgment on mangrove conservation.
In a related statement, Environment Minister Pankaja Munde highlighted that mangrove forests are also present on the agricultural lands of coastal farmers. She emphasized that farmers will be empowered to safeguard these ecosystems.
"The government will undertake proactive measures to offer carbon credits as incentives for the protection of mangrove forests in these areas," she said while responding to a query from BJP legislator Manisha Chaudhari.
Pankaja Munde affirmed that stringent legal action will be pursued against individuals who encroach upon mangrove territories.
The Forest Department operates a dedicated Mangrove Cell focused on the protection and conservation of these forests. Conservation efforts are being implemented through this specialized unit.
"We will ensure accountability for those disrupting the environmental balance by damaging the mangrove forests along Maharashtra's coast. To date, approximately 19 cases have been registered in this regard," she stated.
However, BJP legislator Sneha Dube Pandit raised concerns over the lack of arrests in these cases, advocating for stricter regulations to prevent easy bail for offenders.
Pandit proposed increasing the imprisonment term for mangrove hacking offenses from five to seven years.
