Mamata Banerjee Calls for United Nations Involvement in Bangladesh Situation

Kolkata, Dec 2 (NationPress) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, on Monday, called for the United Nations (UN) to intervene in the escalating crisis in neighboring Bangladesh.

She also proposed that the Union government should consider deploying peacekeeping forces in Bangladesh post-UN intervention.

“These are my proposals. Let the Prime Minister issue a statement regarding this and request UN intervention,” the Chief Minister stated after presenting these proposals during the state Assembly session.

She elaborated on the rationale behind her proposals. “I prefer not to discuss illegal infiltrations. This is solely a matter for the Union government, and we respect the central decisions regarding it. However, the Union government has remained silent on the Bangladesh situation for the past ten days. The ruling party (in India) is urging the sealing of borders and halting the supply of food. We can implement that if the Union government directs us to do so,” the Chief Minister remarked.

Through her address in the Assembly, the Chief Minister reaffirmed her previous position on the issue, stating that her government and party would back any stance taken by the Union government concerning Bangladesh.

Her remarks came a day after a senior official from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) claimed that international peace organizations, including the UN, had shown indifference towards the attacks and atrocities against minority Hindus in Bangladesh, particularly against ISKCON monks.

On Monday, the Chief Minister also expressed her willingness to provide shelter to individuals fleeing from Bangladesh if permitted by the Union government. She condemned the incident involving the disrespect of the Indian Tricolour in Bangladesh.

Furthermore, she mentioned that if the Centre deems it necessary, an Indian representative could be dispatched to Bangladesh for discussions.
