Kolkata, Dec 22 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress stated on Monday that the individual detained for the harassment of Bengali singer Lagnajita Chakraborty is not linked to the party. Trinamool Congress has firmly rejected any political ties between the accused and their organization.
During a press briefing, Bhagwanpur-I block Trinamool president Robin Mandal asserted, "The person who has been arrested has no connection with the Trinamool Congress. He is not a member of our party. The BJP is intentionally attempting to politicize this matter."
This statement from the Trinamool Congress followed claims from BJP officials, including Shankudeb Panda, who alleged that the detained school owner was affiliated with the Trinamool Congress.
Mandal accused Panda of spreading falsehoods with malicious intent to damage the reputation of the Trinamool Congress.
"The assertions made by Shankudeb Panda are entirely unfounded. The accused in this case is a businessman and the proprietor of a private school. He has no ties to our party at any level. A political party cannot be held accountable for an individual's personal criminal actions," he added.
On Sunday, police apprehended the school owner who was implicated in the harassment of singer Lagnajita Chakraborty.
The acting Superintendent of Police for the district, Mitun Kumar Dey, has also initiated a departmental probe against Shahanshah Haque, the officer-in-charge of the Bhagwanpur police station in East Midnapore district, regarding this incident. An SDPO-level officer has been assigned to investigate the situation.
Reports indicate that the popular singer performed at an event hosted by South Point Public School within the jurisdiction of the Bhagwanpur police station on Saturday.
The singer reported that she faced harassment during her performance.
After singing the song 'Jago Ma' from the film 'Devi Chaudhurani', a man from the audience rushed onto the stage and attempted to assault her. Fortunately, others intervened and removed the individual before the situation could escalate further.
Post-incident, Lagnajita chose not to continue her performance.
She accused the school owner, Mehboob Mallick, of being disrespectful and verbally abusive after she decided against performing any longer.
Within 24 hours of the incident, police arrested the main suspect, Mehboob, based on her complaint.
