Manipur: Armed Assault Injures Four; Chief Minister Denounces Attack

Imphal, Dec 28 (NationPress) At least four individuals, including a TV Journalist and a security personnel, were injured after suspected militants unleashed gunfire in Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages within the Imphal East district on Saturday, officials reported.

A police spokesperson indicated that the militants indiscriminately fired upon the villages from a hilltop, injuring a local TV Journalist, a member of the security forces, and two civilians.

TV Journalist L. Kabichandra suffered bullet wounds to his left thigh.

Emergency services swiftly transported all the injured to medical facilities.

“The militants commenced their gunfire in the Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi villages during the night on Friday and into Saturday morning. These locations are in the Imphal East district, adjacent to the tribal-populated Kangpokpi district,” the official elaborated.

In response, additional security forces, led by senior police officials, have been deployed to the affected areas to initiate search operations aimed at apprehending the militants.

Chief Minister N. Biren Singh denounced the indiscriminate firing by militants in the Thamnapokpi and Sanasabi regions on Saturday.

Singh stated in a post on X, "I strongly condemn the indiscriminate firing by Kuki militants at Sanasabi and Thamnapokpi in Imphal East, which resulted in injuries to civilians and security personnel. This cowardly and unprovoked assault on innocent lives constitutes an attack on peace and harmony.

Adequate security personnel have been dispatched to the affected regions. The injured are receiving necessary medical treatment, and the government urges calm and unity in facing such adversities.”

The Chief Minister emphasized the need for proper coordination and understanding between central forces and state police when addressing such incidents.

In the meantime, search operations and area dominance initiatives were executed by combined Central and state security forces in the fringe and vulnerable sectors of both hill and valley districts.

Secure movement for vehicles transporting essential goods, food supplies, and fuel across the two vital National Highways—NH-37 and NH-2—has been assured with adequate security measures.

Stringent security protocols have been established in all vulnerable areas, with security convoys provided in sensitive sections to guarantee the free and safe transit of vehicles.

In an unrelated event, seven acres of illegal poppy cultivation were eradicated by a collaborative team of security forces and forest department officials in the T. Lhanghoimol area of Churachandpur district in Manipur on Friday.
