Manipur Home Minister Konthoujam Govindas Singh on Wednesday, 8 July held a series of high-level security reviews with top Army and paramilitary commanders in Imphal, stressing that coordination among all security agencies would be intensified to restore lasting peace and public confidence across the conflict-affected state.

Key Meetings and What Was Discussed

The Home Minister met Lieutenant General Girish Kalia, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 3 Corps, and Major General Gaurav Sharma, Inspector General of Assam Rifles (South), to assess the prevailing security situation. He subsequently met Gyanendra Pratap Singh, Director General of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), along with other senior paramilitary officials.

In a Facebook post following his meeting with the Army brass, Govindas Singh said: 'We had a productive discussion on the prevailing security scenario and the importance of sustained coordination among all security agencies to further strengthen peace, stability and public confidence in Manipur.'

After the CRPF meeting, he posted: 'We reaffirmed our shared commitment to strengthening coordination, enhancing operational preparedness and ensuring lasting peace and security in the state.'

Backdrop: Deadly Ambush on Assam Rifles Personnel

The high-level consultations come just two days after a suspected Naga armed group ambushed an Assam Rifles vehicle at Nungshang Kong along the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway (NH-2) in Ukhrul district on Monday, 6 July. The attack killed Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh of the 40 Assam Rifles. Security forces have since intensified coordinated operations across several vulnerable districts to track down those responsible and prevent further escalation.

Tribute to the Fallen Soldiers

Earlier on Wednesday, Home Minister Govindas Singh, alongside Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, senior Army officers, and other dignitaries, paid their last respects to the two slain soldiers at Bir Tikendrajit International Airport in Imphal.

Paying tribute, the Home Minister said: 'We pay our heartfelt tribute to the two brave soldiers of the 40 Assam Rifles, Warrant Officer Balwant Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh, who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty at Nungshang Kong in Ukhrul district. We salute their bravery and offer our deepest condolences to their grieving families.'

Government's Commitment Going Forward

Govindas Singh reiterated the state government's resolve to work closely with the Army, Assam Rifles, CRPF, and other security agencies to restore normalcy at the earliest while maintaining a robust security environment. Notably, Manipur has remained on edge amid prolonged ethnic tensions, and the Ukhrul ambush marks a fresh flashpoint in a state already under sustained security pressure. With operations now underway to neutralise the threat, the next few days will be critical in determining whether the violence can be contained.
