Imphal, Jan 24 (NationPress) The Manipur Police and their intelligence division are set to initiate a search for individuals responsible for disseminating “false, fabricated posts, motivated comments, provocative narratives” across various social media platforms, with plans to pursue legal action against these offenders, officials disclosed on Friday.
A senior official from the Home Department stated that police have received directives to monitor the activities of YouTubers, social media influencers, administrators of Facebook pages, X users, and other social media participants.
Legal measures will be enforced, alongside awareness initiatives against the misuse of social media, the official mentioned. He elaborated that these government actions are a response to the ethnic unrest in Manipur and the prevalence of “false, concocted posts, motivated comments, provocative descriptions, and hate commentaries” by certain individuals fueling law and order issues within the state.
Previously, the Manipur government has taken legal steps against those propagating falsehoods and misleading narratives on various social media platforms.
On Thursday, Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, who also oversees the Home portfolio, cautioned that legal actions would be taken against individuals misusing social media platforms and announced that a specialized police team would be formed to investigate such matters.
“No individual, regardless of their influence or power, is entitled to assume the role of moral guardians of society or take the law into their own hands,” the Chief Minister asserted, emphasizing that the government would not permit any faction of social media users to provoke communal tensions.
He also condemned those employing fake identities to incite discord among communities and stirring anti-national sentiments among the youth, stating that individuals using pseudonyms could also face arrest.
The Chief Minister acknowledged the presence of various Civil Society Organisations in the state, indicating that no organization or group holds the authority to arrest, detain, assault, criticize anyone, or wield weapons. He issued a stern warning to those threatening government officials and making financial demands or contracts for development initiatives, reinforcing that there exists a government and legal framework.
