Shillong, March 27 (NationPress) – The Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, reiterated the state government's dedication to providing safe and sustainable drinking water to every household. This commitment was marked by the signing of a crucial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Central government under the Jal Jeevan Mission.

The MoU was executed through a video conference involving the National Jal Jeevan Mission (NJJM), part of the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti, alongside the Government of Meghalaya, with both Sangma and Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Patil present.

Emphasizing the state's goals, Sangma stated that Meghalaya is implementing a comprehensive and long-term strategy for water management, particularly focusing on sustainability and the rejuvenation of water sources.

“Our commitment is to ensure that every household has reliable access to safe drinking water. We are also tackling water source challenges comprehensively to guarantee long-term sustainability,” the Chief Minister remarked.

He highlighted that the state government is proactively addressing water availability and management issues through coordinated planning and execution, especially in rural regions where sustainability of sources is a significant challenge.

This agreement outlines a framework for executing water supply schemes, with the Central government disbursing funds post-MoU signing, while the state takes on primary responsibility for implementation and service delivery.

Union Minister C.R. Patil emphasized that achieving last-mile connectivity in drinking water supply is vital for realizing the Prime Minister’s vision of a “Viksit Bharat”.

“Without ensuring drinking water reaches the last mile, broader developmental goals cannot be realized. The Jal Jeevan Mission must be executed with efficiency and a focus on tangible outcomes,” he asserted.

Patil also highlighted the necessity of aligning with other initiatives, such as the G-RAM-G programme, to enhance overall impact.

Senior officials, including Meghalaya PHE Secretary Pravin Bakshi, participated in the event, which concluded with both parties reaffirming their commitment to bolstering water security in the state.
