Madhya Pradesh Resolves Gunny Bag Shortage for Wheat MSP Procurement
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, April 3 (NationPress) - Madhya Pradesh’s Minister of Food and Civil Supplies, Govind Singh Rajput, announced on Friday that all essential preparations for wheat procurement at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), set to begin on April 10, are being effectively organized across the state.
The Minister indicated that the Revenue Department has accelerated the verification process for registered cultivation areas of farmers.
This year, a total of 1,904,000 farmers have registered for wheat procurement under the MSP, reflecting an increase of 360,000 from the last year.
“Once the verification process concludes, a slot-booking system will be implemented for farmers, allowing them to sell their crops at procurement centers with no hassles,” the Minister remarked.
He also mentioned that issues regarding the availability of gunny bags have been addressed, as the Centre has allocated an additional 50,000 bales of jute for Madhya Pradesh.
Moreover, approval has been given to use HDPE/PP bags and single-use jute gunny bags for wheat procurement, he stated.
Minister Rajput emphasized that to avoid long waiting times at procurement centers, the procurement process is being conducted in a phased approach.
The wheat procurement at Minimum Support Price (MSP) is scheduled to begin on April 10, 2026, in the divisions of Indore, Ujjain, Bhopal, and Narmadapuram, and on April 15, 2026, in the other divisions.
The Centre has set the MSP for wheat at Rs 2,585 per quintal, and the state government has supplemented this with a bonus of Rs 40 per quintal for the farmers’ produce.
This means farmers will receive Rs 2,625 per quintal in total.
This year, despite global challenges and the ongoing conflict in West Asia, the government has set a procurement target of 7.8 million metric tonnes of wheat, keeping the interests of farmers in focus.
Rajput noted that due to the recent conflict in West Asia, there were concerns regarding the supply of petrol, diesel, LPG, and other crucial commodities.
“However, through collaborative efforts from both the Central and State governments, a consistent supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG is being maintained to prevent any disruptions for the public,” he added.
