Kohima, Aug 16 (NationPress) The government of Nagaland has instituted a period of seven days of state mourning starting from Saturday to honor Governor La Ganesan, who passed away in a private medical facility in Chennai, according to officials.
A senior official, referencing a notification from Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen, announced on Saturday that this mourning period will extend from August 16 to 22 to pay tribute to the late La Ganesan.
Throughout this time, the National Flag will be flown at half-mast on all government buildings where it is customarily displayed. La Ganesan had been receiving treatment for a severe head injury sustained from a fall at his residence in T. Nagar, Chennai, on August 8.
Nagaland's Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio expressed his deep sorrow over the loss of Governor La Ganesan.
In his condolence statement, the Chief Minister remarked that La Ganesan dedicated himself to strengthening unity and fostering development in Nagaland.
“Even while holding the highest office in the state, he maintained a humble demeanor and remained closely connected to the community. His modesty endeared him to many and will continue to serve as an inspiration for future generations. During my interactions with him, I recognized him as a person of integrity, principle, and profound wisdom, unwavering in his commitment to constitutional values. His life embodied selfless service, calm leadership, and a steadfast devotion to the principles of justice and unity,” CM Rio stated.
The Chief Minister noted the significant void that La Ganesan's passing has created, but also took solace in the legacy of service, courage, and leadership he has left behind. He emphasized that La Ganesan's contributions to both the state and the nation would be honored with respect and gratitude.
In a similar vein, Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lt. General K.T. Parnaik (Retd.) expressed his heartfelt condolences regarding La Ganesan's death. In a message released on Saturday, he remarked: “The late Ganesan was a distinguished statesman and a remarkable leader, dedicated to social activism, who tirelessly worked for the welfare of the populace while upholding the highest standards of integrity and humility in public service.”
Governor Parnaik fondly recalled Ganesan's exemplary service as Governor of Manipur, West Bengal, and Nagaland, highlighting the warmth with which he engaged with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
La Ganesan was appointed as the Governor of Manipur and served in that role from August 27, 2021, to February 19, 2023. He also held additional responsibilities as Governor of West Bengal from July 18, 2022, to November 17, 2022.
He was known for his extensive travels across all district headquarters and sub-division offices, establishing direct connections with the people of Manipur.
La Ganesan officially took the oath of office as the Governor of Nagaland on February 20, 2023.
