New Delhi, March 4 (NationPress) The 12876 Nandan Kanan Express, en route from Anand Vihar to Puri, experienced a significant incident shortly after leaving Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya (DDU) Junction. The train split into two due to a failure in the coupling mechanism of the S4 sleeper coach, resulting in a state of panic among passengers.
This event transpired on Monday night, shortly after the train departed from platform Number 1 of DDU Junction around 9:30 pm.
Despite being over three hours late, the train continued its journey. However, just about 6 kilometers beyond DDU Junction, two of its coaches became detached due to the coupling issue, causing the train to divide while nearing the yard.
The two separated sections of the train were returned to DDU Junction, with one arriving at platform Number 7 and the other at platform Number 8.
Passengers from the S4 coach, which was detached due to the coupling failure, were moved to another coach.
After the incident, the train was rejoined, and following necessary inspections, it resumed its journey around 1:00 a.m. Fortunately, despite the technical malfunction, no serious injuries were reported, although the passengers were understandably rattled by the experience.
Railway officials acted swiftly to manage the situation by returning the detached coach components to platforms 7 and 8 at DDU Junction.
The authorities successfully relocated both sections back to DDU Junction and positioned them on platforms 7 and 8. Engineers assessed the damaged S4 coach, declared it unfit for travel, and transferred the passengers to other compartments.
Many passengers voiced their frustration and anger over the incident, holding Indian Railways accountable for the unsettling experience. The coupling failure, which led to the train's division, raised significant concerns regarding the maintenance and safety protocols of the rail network.
Railway officials have promised that an investigation will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the coupling failure. Meanwhile, passengers are seeking accountability for the disruption and inconvenience caused, which included the prolonged delay and the panic that unfolded during the incident.
