NIMHANS Records Over 5 Million Patient Visits in Past Decade: J P Nadda

New Delhi, Jan 3 (NationPress) The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS) has established itself as an Institute of National Importance, having recorded more than 5 million patient visits over the past decade, Union Health Minister J P Nadda announced on Friday.
During the golden jubilee celebrations of NIMHANS in Bengaluru, Nadda praised the faculty and students for their efforts in positioning NIMHANS as one of India's leading institutions.
“I extend my heartfelt thanks to the faculty members, students, and all stakeholders who have played a vital role in the transformation of NIMHANS from a mental health institute to an Institute of National Importance,” he remarked.
He highlighted that patient visits have surged from under 1 million in the 1970s to over 5 million in the last decade.
“The increase in patient visits at NIMHANS has expanded more than five-fold, from under 1 million in the 1970s to over 5 million in the last ten years,” said Nadda.
“The magnitude of NIMHANS's capability to handle such a large number of patients establishes it as a leader in quality healthcare in India,” he added.
The Union Minister also commended NIMHANS for being the first hospital accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) among all Institutes of National Importance. NIMHANS is also ranked among the top 200 hospitals worldwide.
Nadda further emphasized the government's efforts to mainstream mental health through the National Mental Health Programme, which has been operational since 2022.
“The government is committed to enhancing mental healthcare via the TeleMANAS scheme, with NIMHANS serving as the leading coordinating center for this initiative,” Nadda stated.
Launched in 2022, TeleMANAS offers 24x7 services and has received 16.6 lakh calls since its launch. All states and union territories have adopted the service, and there are currently 53 active cells, according to the health ministry.
Nadda mentioned that NIMHANS trains over 1,000 students in TeleMANAS and counseling.
The event was also honored by President Droupadi Murmu, who suggested that NIMHANS incorporate yoga as a method for addressing mental and physical distress.
