Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Chief of the Indian Army, General Upendra Dwivedi, stated that the condition along the northern and northwestern borders is currently stable and under firm control, but he emphasized the necessity for constant vigilance.
He remarked that Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) has experienced a notable positive transformation in 2025, adding that the shift from terrorism to tourism is progressively taking shape in the union territory. He also noted that in the past year, security forces have neutralized 31 terrorists, with 65 percent being of Pakistani origin, including those responsible for the Pahalgam terror incident.
During the annual press briefing of the Indian Army, General Dwivedi pointed out that the state of affairs along the Northern Front is stable, but requires constant vigilance. He highlighted that high-level interactions, renewed contacts, and confidence-building measures are fostering the gradual normalization of the situation, allowing for activities such as grazing and hydrotherapy camps along the Northern Borders.
“With our ongoing strategic focus on this front, our deployment along the Line of Actual Control is balanced and robust. In parallel, capability development and infrastructure improvements are advancing through a comprehensive governmental approach,” he stated.
General Dwivedi, addressing the North-western Front, recalled India's decisive action following the Pahalgam terror attack, underscoring that a clear decision to respond assertively was made at the highest level.
“Operation Sindoor was meticulously planned and executed. Initiated within 22 minutes on May 7 and orchestrated over 88 hours until May 10, the operation reset strategic calculations by striking deep, dismantling terror infrastructures, and challenging the long-standing nuclear rhetoric,” he explained.
“The Army successfully demolished seven out of nine designated targets and played a crucial role in ensuring a calibrated response to Pakistani actions,” he added.
The Army Chief reiterated that Operation Sindoor is still active, and any future misadventure will be met with a resolute response, emphasizing that this military action is a prime example of tri-service synergy under a definitive political directive with full autonomy to act or react.
He also recognized the proactive involvement of all parties engaged in the operation.
General Dwivedi noted that since May 10, the scenario along the North-western Front and in J&K remains sensitive but firmly under control.
“In 2025, we eliminated 31 terrorists, 65 percent of whom were of Pakistani origin, including three individuals involved in the Pahalgam attack who were neutralized in Operation Mahadev. Active local terrorists are now in single digits, and terrorist recruitment has nearly ceased, with only two in 2025,” he stated.
Highlighting the clear signs of positive change in J&K, the Army Chief mentioned robust development initiatives, the revival of tourism, and the peaceful Shri Amarnath Yatra, which attracted over four lakh pilgrims, surpassing the five-year average.
“The theme of terrorism to tourism is gradually taking shape,” he concluded.
