Kolkata, Oct 23 (NationPress) A man has been arrested for assaulting a female nurse in the Birbhum district of West Bengal, as confirmed by the police on Thursday.
The incident took place at the Kaijuli Block Primary Health Centre (BPHC), situated in the Mohammad Bazar area on Wednesday evening.
The arrested individual has been identified as Rajib Kahar.
According to the police, the assault occurred when the nurse was heading home after completing her shift at BPHC.
Initial investigations indicate that Kahar entered the health centre and began requesting various medicines, before suddenly attacking her with stones.
The accused repeatedly struck her on the head, prompting locals to intervene and apprehend him.
Subsequently, officers from the Mohammad Bazar Police Station took the accused into custody.
The nurse, identified as Rina Mondal, was taken to Suri Super Speciality Hospital, where she received 22 stitches on her head.
"The nurse suffered severe head injuries requiring 22 stitches. The perpetrator has been arrested, and an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack on the female nurse," a senior officer from the Birbhum district police stated. This incident has shocked the local community.
Notably, just days prior, a female doctor was assaulted at the Uluberia Sarat Chandra Chatterjee Medical College and Hospital in Howrah district.
The junior doctor, who was in the maternity ward during the attack, reported that one assailant twisted her arm while another slapped her neck, with some in the group threatening her with rape and death. Fortunately, she was rescued by the ward nurse and other staff.
Following the incident, the junior doctor filed a formal complaint at the Uluberia police station, resulting in the arrest of four suspects, including a traffic home guard.
