This incident has ignited public outrage and political tension, as the Opposition Congress party has directed its criticism towards Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also serves as the state's Home Minister.
Footage from CCTV that emerged online shows a masked individual snatching a chain from a woman. The alarming event transpired in a lift situated behind the hospital's blood bank.
The incident came to light on Monday after the CCTV visuals circulated, creating a ripple of shock throughout the city.
The administration of AIIMS Bhopal confirmed to IANS that the matter was revealed after the victim reported it to them on Monday, leading to a formal complaint filed at the Bagh Sevania police station.
“A distressing case of chain snatching involving a female staff member was reported, resulting in a complaint being lodged at the Bagh Sevania police station. The administration of AIIMS will convene to determine the next steps,” a senior physician, who also oversees Public Relations at AIIMS Bhopal, informed IANS.
He elaborated that the security personnel at AIIMS had also conducted a meeting following the incident. The doctor, wishing to remain anonymous, indicated that they would hold accountable those responsible.
“This is a criminal matter, and law enforcement will conduct their investigation. However, the AIIMS administration will investigate the causes and those accountable (security staff) and will take appropriate measures. Our discussions with senior administrative personnel are ongoing,” he added.
Varsha, an employee of AIIMS, was alone in the lift during her duty when a young man, masked, entered and engaged her in conversation about a medical department.
As they reached the third floor, the man exited, then swiftly turned back and attacked her. He attempted to seize her gold and pearl necklace along with her mangalsutra. When Varsha resisted, he forcefully pushed her and escaped towards the staircase with the mangalsutra, while the pearl necklace broke and fell to the ground.
This shocking event has incited public anger and also prompted political debate, with the Opposition Congress criticizing the BJP government for fostering an environment of rampant crime due to inadequate law enforcement.
The Leader of Opposition in Madhya Pradesh, Umang Singhar, shared the incident's video on social media, launching a direct critique at Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who also oversees the state's Home Department.
“Home Minister ji, please step forward and acknowledge the deteriorating law and order situation in the state! The audacious daytime robbery at AIIMS in the capital is blatant evidence of how criminals feel empowered under the BJP government,” Singhar articulated on X on Tuesday.
