Khanna (Punjab), April 26 (NationPress) The pond cleaning initiative launched by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab is beginning to show positive outcomes, as the pond in Bhumaddi village in Khanna has been thoroughly desilted and rejuvenated after nearly half a century.
Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond, who also serves as the legislator for Khanna, visited the village to assess the cleaning progress of the pond.
During his visit, the village sarpanch, Harmandeep Singh, reported to the minister that the pond had not undergone any cleaning in the past five decades. Now, following the removal of silt, the pond is receiving a revitalized appearance.
The villagers expressed their appreciation to the government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, for this initiative.
Sond noted that the cleaning of village ponds is being executed on a large scale across Punjab, asserting that previous administrations had overlooked the upkeep of these essential water bodies. However, this endeavor has become achievable through current government efforts.
He mentioned that the goal is to clean all village ponds by draining their water prior to the monsoon season, with desilting and dewatering being conducted wherever required.
Furthermore, he stated that a solar motor will be installed in the pond post-cleaning to provide treated water for agricultural purposes.
The minister revealed that the government is actively cleaning approximately 15,000 ponds in the state, with work already in progress in many villages. He emphasized that enhancing basic infrastructure in rural areas, particularly focusing on the repair, maintenance, and improvement of ponds, as well as the development of sports facilities, is a government priority.
Under the guidance of Chief Minister Mann and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the mission to transform Punjab into a vibrant 'Rangla Punjab' is advancing swiftly.
Sond also added that before the onset of the monsoon, the government will desilt ponds as needed and drain contaminated water. This effort is expected to enhance groundwater levels and help tackle the issue of the diminishing water table.
