Kathmandu, Jan 4 (NationPress) Former Prime Minister of Nepal, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’, is set to travel to New Delhi for a gathering organized by the Nepali diaspora community on Monday, as announced by his secretariat this past Sunday.
Dahal, who holds the position of coordinator for the Nepali Communist Party—which emerged from the merger of the previous Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), and various other leftist factions—will deliver a speech at an event hosted by the Nepali Society, India at the Lajpat Bhawan Auditorium.
This visit coincides with the upcoming elections for the House of Representatives in Nepal, scheduled for March 5, during which many Nepalis residing abroad are expected to return to vote.
“The primary purpose of this visit is to connect with the Nepali community, specifically our party's supporters, to spread a message of unity among the communist factions under the banner of the Nepali Communist Party,” stated Haribol Gajurel, a senior leader of the party, in an interview with IANS. “We have been conducting mass gatherings to promote this message of unity within Nepal, and this event in New Delhi fits into that framework.”
In early November last year, the CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist), and more than a dozen minor leftist parties united to form the Nepali Communist Party. With fresh elections on the horizon, political entities in Nepal are working to bolster their positions. Following the Gen Z movement in September last year, traditional political parties—such as the one led by Prachanda—are facing intensified scrutiny regarding their shortcomings.
Gajurel also mentioned the possibility of an informal meeting with Indian politicians, although no such arrangements are confirmed yet. Dahal previously visited New Delhi in May 2023 as Nepal's Prime Minister, during which several agreements were finalized between the two nations.
According to a statement from Prachanda’s secretariat, the upcoming gathering aims to enhance mutual respect, collaboration, and a shared vision for the future among the Nepali community. “The primary goal of this program is to unite Nepali nationals residing in India and foster social and political consciousness,” the statement elaborated.
During the gathering, Prachanda is expected to address topics of significance to the Nepali community in India, the enhancement of Nepal-India relations, the challenges and opportunities faced by the Nepali diaspora, as well as the criticality of unity and collaboration.
