President Murmu to Inaugurate Human Rights Day Celebrations Tomorrow

New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) President Droupadi Murmu will act as the Chief Guest at a ceremony honoring Human Rights Day here on Tuesday, as stated in an official release.

The theme for this year’s Human Rights Day, “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now,” highlights that human rights are not merely aspirational but also serve as a practical means for empowering individuals and communities to forge a brighter future, the statement noted.

In observance of Human Rights Day, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) will host an event at the Plenary Hall of Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. This event will be succeeded by a comprehensive conference spanning the day on 'Mental well-being: Navigating stress from classroom to workplace'.

The conference will comprise three sessions addressing topics such as ‘Stress among Children and Adolescents’, ‘Mental health challenges in institutions of higher learning’, and ‘Stress and burnout at workplaces’, as indicated in the statement.

Since its establishment in 1993, over 23.14 lakh instances of human rights violations have been documented, with Rs 256.57 crore recommended as compensation to victims of such violations by the NHRC.

Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10 to honor the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), which was adopted and proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.

The UDHR acts as a global standard for the safeguarding and advancement of human rights. The NHRC, India perceives Human Rights Day as a chance for various global stakeholders to contemplate their actions and responsibilities, ensuring they do not contribute to human rights violations.

The UDHR embodies the notion that all individuals are born free and equal, entitled to life, liberty, security, equality under the law, and the freedom of thought, conscience, religion, opinion, and expression.

This principle is also enshrined in India’s Constitution and the Protection of Human Rights Act (PHRA), 1993, which laid the legislative groundwork for the formation of the NHRC, India on October 12, 1993.

The President will be the Chief Guest, alongside NHRC Acting Chairperson Vijaya Bharathi Sayani, Secretary General Bharat Lal, senior officials, members of statutory commissions, SHRCs, diplomats, civil society representatives, and other esteemed guests.
