New Delhi, July 4 (NationPress) The Congress party has launched a distinctive women-focused initiative by distributing sanitary pads, leading to significant controversy in Bihar ahead of the elections. Various political factions have sharply criticized what they label as a 'peculiar' approach to attract voters.
The ruling Janata Dal (United) has launched a fierce critique of the Congress, accusing them of politicizing women's issues and exemplifying their ideological emptiness.
Controversy ignited after a photo of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi appeared on sanitary pad packages being distributed under the party's Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, aimed at enhancing menstrual hygiene awareness among women in Bihar.
This initiative is part of a broader campaign targeting women voters in the state, with the Congress claiming it plans to distribute over 500,000 sanitary pad boxes to improve menstrual health, dismantle social stigmas, and raise awareness in both rural and urban regions.
However, JD-U spokesperson Neeraj Kumar vehemently condemned the Congress's actions.
"What has come over the Congress Party?" he questioned, denouncing the tactic as a superficial electoral ploy.
“Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has been tirelessly working to empower women in the state, fostering an environment for their comprehensive development. During this election year, women and daughters symbolize respect and dignity, yet you arrogantly showcase your image on sanitary pads,” he said, criticizing the use of Rahul Gandhi’s likeness.
Neeraj Kumar further indicated that the Congress’s alliance with the RJD has led to such political blunders.
“This exemplifies what is termed as ideological bankruptcy or lack of insight. They fail to grasp the implications of associating with a party like the RJD, notorious for its political misdeeds, which is evident from this cooperation,” he added.
The sanitary pad initiative is part of the Priyadarshini Udaan Yojana, which the Congress claims is a platform for advocating menstrual hygiene and awareness.
Additionally, the party has introduced the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, a flagship welfare program focused on the economic empowerment of women.
Under the Mai Bahin Maan Yojana, the Congress promises to deposit Rs 2,500 monthly into the bank accounts of economically disadvantaged women if the Grand Alliance secures victory in Bihar.
