New Delhi, Jan 28 (NationPress) Rahul Gandhi, the Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, visited the Valmiki Temple in Delhi on Tuesday, showcasing a significant outreach initiative prior to the Assembly elections scheduled for February 5 in the national Capital.
Accompanied by Sandeep Dikshit, the Congress candidate for the New Delhi Assembly, Rahul Gandhi offered prayers at the temple and interacted with residents of the Dalit colony. As a sign of appreciation, locals presented a turban to the Congress leader.
In the New Delhi constituency, Sandeep Dikshit is contending with tough rivals, including AAP National Convenor and former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, as well as BJP's Parvesh Verma.
After his temple visit, Rahul Gandhi engaged with residents of the New Delhi Assembly constituency, particularly women from the Dalit colony, to address their issues and concerns. He also visited Gole Market to connect with more locals.
Speaking to IANS, Sandeep Dikshit underscored critical issues in the area, especially unemployment. He criticized both AAP and BJP for overlooking the issues faced by employees of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC).
"The predominant challenge here is unemployment. Previously, 7,800 individuals were employed by NDMC, but such jobs are now nonexistent. Even compensatory positions for employees' families have ceased. Kejriwal, who was affiliated with NDMC, never tackled this problem.
"Likewise, the BJP, which manages NDMC under the auspices of the Union Home Ministry, has failed to respond. Rahul Gandhi has committed to raising these concerns in Parliament," Dikshit stated.
Residents also expressed worries about housing and employment.
Sunita, a local resident, shared with IANS, "We have requested adequate housing and job opportunities for our children. Rahul Gandhi pledged to ensure these matters are prioritized. We remain optimistic that he will deliver on this promise."
An additional resident, Suman, echoed similar views, telling IANS, "We desperately need homes and jobs for our children. Rahul Gandhi assured us that our requests would be addressed promptly following a Congress victory in the Assembly elections."
Later in the day, LoP Gandhi is expected to address rallies in Patparganj and Okhla as the Congress escalates its campaign for the Delhi Assembly elections.
The Delhi Assembly elections are slated for February 5, with results to be revealed on February 8.
