Indore, June 10 (NationPress) The family of Raj Kushwaha, who has been labeled as the purported mastermind behind the murder of Raja Raghuvanshi, has publicly defended him, maintaining that he is innocent and not capable of such an act.
On Monday, family members expressed that Raj, the sole breadwinner of the family, is being wrongfully accused and had merely a professional association with Sonam Raghuvanshi, Raja's wife.
In a statement to reporters, Raj's mother asserted, "My son is innocent. The police have misrepresented the facts. There is no veracity in these allegations. My son could never commit such an act. He is responsible for his sisters and works diligently. I refuse to believe any of this."
Raj's family includes his mother and three sisters, following the passing of their father during the Covid-19 pandemic.
His sister also voiced her support, saying, "I know my brother. He would never engage in such behavior. I am also acquainted with Vishal; he is like a brother to me. They are both innocent and incapable of such acts. This is all untrue."
She dismissed claims of Raj's supposed affair with Sonam, emphasizing, "They were not in a relationship. Their connection was strictly professional. I want to stress that my brother is not implicated in this case."
The Meghalaya Police apprehended Sonam Raghuvanshi in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh, where she turned herself in at the Nandganj police station early Monday morning.
Authorities alleged that Sonam plotted her husband's murder by hiring contract killers during their honeymoon in Meghalaya. Her surrender was reportedly triggered by ongoing pressure from a coordinated investigation across multiple states.
In addition to Sonam and Raj Kushwaha, three others—Vishal Singh Chauhan, Anand, and Akash—are accused of being involved in the murder conspiracy.
Sources indicate that Raj Kushwaha, who is five years junior to Sonam, had a relationship with her prior to her marriage to Raja. Investigators suspect that they conspired to eliminate Raja Raghuvanshi.
Call detail records allegedly revealed frequent communication between Sonam and Raj, which became a pivotal lead in the investigation. As a result, Raj was apprehended in a joint operation involving police forces from Indore and Shillong.
Currently, Sonam is under the custody of the Meghalaya Police, secured at the Phulwari Sharif police station in Patna.
According to reports, she will be transported from Patna Airport to Guwahati on Tuesday at 12:40 p.m., with police expected to arrive at the airport by 11 a.m. From Guwahati, she will be transported by road to Shillong.
The Meghalaya Police have obtained a five-day transit remand for Sonam to facilitate further inquiries and investigations.
The body of Raja Raghuvanshi was discovered in a gorge near the Weisawdong Parking Lot in Meghalaya on June 2.
The couple had been reported missing since May 23, leading to an initial missing persons investigation that evolved into a homicide inquiry following the recovery of Raja's body.
Sonam remained untraceable until June 8, when she surrendered in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh.
