Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, Feb 5 (NationPress) The Rajasthan government has officially announced in the Legislative Assembly that there is currently no initiative aimed at enforcing educational qualifications as a requirement for candidates vying in urban local body elections.
Nonetheless, efforts are being made by the Law Department to lift the existing restriction preventing individuals with more than two children from participating in elections.
This information was disclosed in response to an unstarred question posed by Congress MLA Pusaram Godara. This marks the first occasion the government has provided a written clarification regarding these matters.
According to the government, although previous discussions took place concerning the potential implementation of educational qualifications for candidates, the proposal was not met with agreement, as numerous public representatives expressed their opposition.
Consequently, there are no current plans to modify the regulations in this area. As has been the case in previous elections, candidates without formal education will still be allowed to run.
The government further explained that Section 21 of the Rajasthan Municipal Act, 2009, which outlines the qualifications for candidates in urban local body elections, does not include any stipulations regarding educational qualifications, and no amendments are being proposed at this time.
As for the issue concerning the number of children, the government noted that a proposal has been forwarded to the Law Department to revise Section 24 of the Rajasthan Municipalities Act, 2009.
This amendment aims to eliminate the existing condition that disqualifies candidates with more than two children from running for office. The proposal is currently under consideration.
Congress MLA Pusaram Godara had specifically inquired whether the government plans to amend the rules related to educational qualifications and the two-child policy for candidates in urban local body elections.
