Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Raisen, April 11 (NationPress) On Saturday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh emphasized that acquiring food grains, fruits, and vegetables from farmers located near Army cantonments represents a noteworthy advancement that benefits both military personnel and the agricultural sector.
During his address at the ‘Unnat Krishi Mahotsav’ in Raisen district, Singh stated, “In areas where Army units are based, we are sourcing food items from local farmers. This initiative guarantees our soldiers receive fresh and pure food products while simultaneously uplifting the farmers, particularly in organic agriculture. This is truly a significant step.”
He pointed out that such initiatives not only bolster local economies but also foster sustainable farming practices by ensuring that farmers near military bases have reliable markets for their produce.
Expressing a personal connection to the cause, Singh remarked, “I am here today not just as the Defence Minister but also as a farmer. Regardless of the roles I have taken on, the farmer within me has always been front and center.”
While acknowledging the progress made in agriculture in recent years, Singh noted, “There is still much more to be accomplished.” He highlighted that agriculture should be prioritized on par with sectors like science and space exploration.
Singh urged for a swift evolution, stating that India’s agricultural sector needs to be driven by technology and should be globally competitive.
“The future of Indian agriculture hinges on innovation and technology. Farmers should embrace modern techniques such as drones, precision farming, and scientific methodologies to enhance both yields and profitability,” he added.
Discussing initiatives for farmer welfare, Singh mentioned that the government has implemented several effective measures in recent years. “Programs like Kisan Samman Nidhi and crop insurance are being introduced to honor the dignity and hard work of farmers,” he noted, explaining that direct benefit transfers ensure farmers receive full payments without intermediaries.
Referring to farmers as the “foundation of the nation,” Singh connected their success to national progress and stressed the importance of sustainable practices such as water conservation and efficient irrigation, particularly in regions like Raisen, Vidisha, and Sehore.
He remarked that events like the Krishi Mahotsav serve as critical links between scientists and farmers, facilitating the adoption of modern agricultural technologies at the grassroots level.
In attendance were Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, and various prominent leaders, highlighting modern agricultural machinery, agritech startups, and advanced farming technologies, drawing participants from across the nation.
