Bhubaneswar, April 20 (NationPress) A rape suspect attempted suicide in a bid to frame the family of the victim woman in a fabricated criminal case in the Balipatana region of Bhubaneswar.
In a statement to the media, Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena disclosed that an individual named Dipti Ranjan Mohapatra filed a complaint at the Balipatana police station during the late hours of Saturday into Sunday, alleging that he was shot at by two assailants while on his way to observe ‘Rama Leela’.
DCP Meena elaborated that Dipti asserted he was shot by Sambit Mohapatra and Rajkishore Behera, resulting in an injury to his left arm.
“An investigation was initiated following the complaint lodged by Dipti. However, from the outset, we harbored doubts regarding his account, particularly after conducting a scientific examination of the gunshot wounds on his left arm. It was revealed that a case had been filed against him at the Mahila Police station last year concerning rape and the dissemination of obscene images and videos of the victim,” stated DCP Meena.
The DCP mentioned that the victim had previously filed a case (104/24) against Dipti at the Mahila police station in Bhubaneswar on June 10, 2024.
According to the DCP, Dipti was apprehended on June 21, 2024, and a chargesheet was subsequently submitted following the investigation.
“After his release on bail, the accused devised this scheme as an act of revenge against the victim’s family. As part of this plan, Dipti inflicted injury on himself using a firearm but falsely accused the family members of the act,” he remarked.
On Sunday, police arrested Dipti along with two accomplices - Amaresh Pradhan and Tofan Bisoi - who assisted him in executing the plan.
Authorities revealed that Amaresh Pradhan procured the firearms, while the intermediary, Tofan Bisoi, supplied them.
“Tofan Bisoi was present at the scene during the shooting. After the incident, he fled the location with the firearm,” the official added.
Law enforcement has confiscated one empty cartridge, three mobile devices, one 9 mm pistol, and four live rounds from the suspects’ possession.
