Congress Calls RG Kar Victim's Mother's Political Move a Positive Step
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, March 20 (NationPress) The Congress party on Friday described it as a 'positive development' after the mother of the victim from the Kolkata RG Kar rape and murder case announced her intention to run for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections on a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ticket.
In response, Congress leader Rakesh Sinha stated that if the mother of the RG Kar victim is looking to enter politics in pursuit of justice, it is something that should be supported. He emphasized that her decision signifies a commitment to scrutinizing the system and shedding light on vital issues regarding women's safety.
"I consider this a positive development. If the victim's mother aims to contest elections with the goal of obtaining justice for girls like her daughter, then this initiative is commendable. Participating in elections can serve as a platform to voice concerns and demand accountability," he remarked to IANS.
Sinha encouraged the RG Kar victim's mother to actively engage in the electoral process and strive for justice for victims of similar crimes. He reiterated that it is important for her to challenge the system and address the pressing concerns surrounding the safety and dignity of women.
This announcement comes after the victim’s mother expressed her willingness to contest the forthcoming Assembly elections from the Panihati constituency in North 24 Parganas, where her family resides.
She disclosed that she had previously been approached by the BJP but was not ready to make a decision at that time. Now, her motivation for entering politics is to seek justice for her daughter and ensure the safety of women throughout the state.
"I had received an offer from the BJP earlier, but I was not in the right frame of mind then. Now, my goal is to contest elections to pursue justice for my daughter and the safety of all women," she stated.
Additionally, she accused political parties of trying to exploit her daughter's tragic death for their own gain.
In the meantime, West Bengal BJP President Samik Bhattacharya chose not to comment on the situation.
Notably, the Panihati assembly seat was absent from the initial candidate list provided by the BJP, leading to speculation about potential announcements in the future.
BJP State Spokesperson Debjit Sarkar mentioned that any decisions related to candidacy would be made by the party's parliamentary committee in Delhi. He added that while he personally empathized with the mother of the RG Kar victim, an official statement from the party would follow only after appropriate approvals.
