Chief Minister Nitish Kumar presented the initial funds and handed over keys to 4,509 fortunate recipients, turning the dream of homeownership into reality. This scheme, which seeks to provide housing for those without homes, has made substantial strides in Samastipur. During a video conference on Wednesday, Chief Minister Kumar transferred Rs 40,000 each to the bank accounts of 35,114 beneficiaries from various blocks within the district, commencing the construction of their homes.
This initial payment is part of a larger plan, with a total of Rs 94.68 crore earmarked for house construction under PMAY in Samastipur.
The funds were distributed in a straightforward yet significant ceremony at the Collectorate, representing the first step towards a brighter future for these families.
District Deputy Development Commissioner (DDC) Sandeep Shekhar Priyadarshi indicated that Samastipur’s target for the 2024-25 financial year is to construct 44,477 houses, with 38,286 homes already approved in two phases. Of these, 26,206 homes were approved in the second phase, and the first installment has been successfully distributed to 23,517 beneficiaries.
Samastipur now proudly boasts the highest number of beneficiaries in the state. In another noteworthy development, 4,509 homes have been completed, and their keys have been handed over to the rightful owners.
Among the recipients, five beneficiaries from Samastipur block were invited to the Collectorate to receive their keys after completing physical verification.
Beneficiaries expressed immense joy and gratitude upon receiving the keys.
In an interview with IANS, Kumari Anju, a beneficiary, shared: “Previously, we didn’t have a house. My husband operates a handcart, and with the funds from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, we’ve constructed a home. Now, I’m holding the keys to our house.”
Vibha Devi, another beneficiary, stated, “My husband is a laborer, and we lacked the funds to build a house. Thanks to the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, we now have a roof over our heads. Our family will now happily live under this roof for the rest of our lives.”
The PMAY, launched on June 25, 2015, is a component of the government’s ambitious mission to ensure housing for all in urban areas.
This initiative aims to provide central assistance to states and Union Territories to construct homes for eligible families, with a target of building approximately 1.12 crore houses. The minimum size for a house under PMAY is 30 square metres, but states can adjust this based on local requirements.
