The Saraswati Antya Pushkaralu, a rare 12-day sacred bathing festival, commenced at Kaleshwaram in Jayashankar Bhupalapally district, Telangana, on Thursday, 21 May, with Kanchi Math pontiff Sri Shankar Vijayendra Saraswati leading the first holy dip. The event, running through 1 June, is being held in Telangana for the first time and is expected to draw between 20 and 30 lakh devotees.

The Sacred Significance of Kaleshwaram

Kaleshwaram holds a unique place in Hindu pilgrimage geography. The Saraswati River — believed to be a mystical, subterranean stream — merges here with the Godavari and Pranahita rivers, forming the sacred Triveni Sangam. Notably, this is one of only two locations in India where such a confluence occurs, the other being Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. A holy dip at the Triveni Sangam is traditionally believed to absolve sins and release devotees from the cycle of rebirth.

First Dip and Key Participants

The inaugural sacred bath took place at 5.43 am, with State Endowments Minister Konda Surekha and IT and Industries Minister Dudilla Sridhar Babu, accompanied by his wife, among the first to enter the waters. MLAs Gandra Satyanarayana Rao and Malreddy Rangareddy, Endowments Department Commissioner Hanumantha Rao, District Collector Rahul Sharma, and religious advisor Govinda Hari also participated. Devotees from across Telangana and neighbouring states joined in large numbers.

Government Arrangements and Chief Minister's Appeal

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had called for the festival to be observed with devotion and grandeur, directing officials to ensure arriving pilgrims face no difficulties. He specifically instructed that traffic management be handled without impeding devotees' movement and, given the prevailing intense heat, urged pilgrims to take adequate health precautions.

District Collector Rahul Sharma confirmed that all departments are working in coordination to ensure safe and comfortable Pushkara Snanams throughout the auspicious period. Arrangements in place include security deployment, sanitation, drinking water supply, medical services, and transportation facilities, according to an official release.

Historical and Pilgrimage Context

The Pushkaralu festival cycle rotates across India's major rivers over a 12-year period, with each river receiving its turn for a concentrated period of sacred bathing. The Saraswati Antya Pushkaralu marks the concluding phase of this cycle for the Saraswati River. The fact that Kaleshwaram hosts one of only two Triveni Sangam sites associated with the subterranean Saraswati elevates its religious stature considerably, drawing pilgrims who may not have previously visited this part of northern Telangana. This is the first time the Telangana state administration has hosted the event, making the logistical scale a significant undertaking for the district machinery.
