Shillong, June 1 (NationPress) The Meghalaya Police, along with the East Khasi Hills district administration and local residents, are engaged in a frantic search effort to locate a tourist couple from Madhya Pradesh who have been missing since May 24 while exploring the picturesque Sohra-Cherrapunji region of the northeastern state.
Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, reported on Sunday that continuous rainfall and steep, slippery terrains pose significant challenges for the search operations.
He noted that heavy rain in recent days and poor visibility have severely hampered the search and rescue efforts.
"We have mobilized drones and sniffer dogs in our quest to find the couple who vanished in the Sohra-Cherrapunji areas of the East Khasi Hills district. Every villager in the vicinity is now contributing to the search operation," the police chief shared with IANS.
The administration may seek assistance from paramilitary forces to enhance the search efforts, he added.
As per police reports, the newlywed couple, Raja Raghuvanshi, aged 29, and Sonam Raghuvanshi, aged 27, both from Indore, went missing on May 24 while touring the scenic regions of Meghalaya.
They arrived in the state on May 20 for their honeymoon, visiting several places before reaching the Sohra-Cherrapunji area, a popular tourist destination in the northeast.
After renting a motorcycle, they explored the beautiful surroundings before disappearing. Their rented vehicle was found abandoned near Sohra Rim, which is located 15 kilometers from Sohra town. Moreover, the couple's mobile phones have been turned off since the night of May 24.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and officials from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) communicated with Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma last week to inquire about the search operation's progress.
Sangma stated: "We consider tourists as part of our family. The people of Sohra-Cherrapunji also regard tourists as their own family. A large number of villagers are actively participating in the search operation."
"I am personally overseeing the search and rescue efforts at all times," the Chief Minister emphasized.
Madhya Pradesh Members of Parliament Shankar Lalwani and Sumer Singh Solanki traveled to Meghalaya to meet with Director General of Police I. Nongrang and Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang to discuss the ongoing search operations.
