Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday, 18 May inaugurated the Shaheed Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera, a new public utility centre, in Netanar village of Bastar district, Chhattisgarh. The centre has been established within the premises of a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camp and is aimed at driving development, employment generation, and self-reliance in a region long scarred by Left-Wing Extremism (LWE).

Significance of the Visit

This was Shah's first visit to Bastar since the government declared the complete eradication of LWE in the region — a milestone that marks a decisive turn in one of India's longest-running internal security challenges. Describing the Seva Dera as a symbol of the state's post-conflict transition, Shah said both the Centre and the Chhattisgarh government are committed to ensuring that development reaches every citizen in the area without exception.

Tributes to Fallen Soldiers

A central element of the programme was the tribute paid to security personnel who lost their lives in the line of duty. In a deeply emotional moment, Shah personally met the families of Kalendra Prasad Nayak and Pawan Kumar Mandavi, two soldiers martyred in a Naxal attack in Bijapur. Sitting alongside the bereaved families, he offered condolences and assured them of all possible administrative and financial support from the government.

Shah also addressed security forces deployed in the region, commending their courage and dedication. He said the sacrifices made by personnel to establish peace and order in Bastar 'would always be remembered and would never go in vain.'

Political Leadership Present

The inauguration was attended by Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Vijay Sharma, State President Kiran Deo, and Minister Kedar Kashyap, along with a large gathering of local villagers and elected representatives. Chief Minister Sai said Chhattisgarh 'would never forget the valour and sacrifice of its martyred soldiers,' and stressed that the state was moving ahead with sensitivity to ensure the dignity and welfare of martyrs' families.

Bastar's Road Ahead

Sai described Bastar as entering 'a new era marked by peace, trust and development,' crediting security forces with playing a pivotal role in the region's transformation. The Shaheed Veer Gundadhur Seva Dera is positioned as one of the early institutional steps in translating hard-won security gains into tangible civilian benefits. Notably, the centre's name honours Veer Gundadhur, a revered tribal freedom fighter from Bastar — a deliberate cultural signal alongside the administrative initiative.

With the CRPF camp providing the physical infrastructure and the Centre backing the initiative, officials expect the facility to serve as a one-stop resource for local communities seeking government services, livelihood support, and welfare entitlements. Further expansion of such centres across the region is likely to follow as the post-LWE development push gains pace.
