Amit Shah to inaugurate ₹128 crore Madhur Dairy plant in Gandhinagar on May 17
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate a fully automated milk processing and packaging plant of Madhur Dairy at Dashela village in Gandhinagar district, Gujarat, on 17 May 2025. The facility, built at an estimated cost of ₹128 crore, marks a significant expansion of the cooperative dairy sector in the district.
Plant Capacity and Scale
The new plant, developed by the Gandhinagar District Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Limited, has a milk processing capacity of 2.5 lakh litres per day, with the infrastructure designed to scale up to 5 lakh litres daily as demand grows. Following the inauguration, Madhur Dairy's total milk processing and packaging capacity will double to 5 lakh litres per day, making it the largest cooperative milk union in Gandhinagar district.
Key Attendees at the Inauguration
The inauguration ceremony will be attended by a senior cross-section of Gujarat's political leadership. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi, State Legislative Assembly Speaker Shankar Chaudhary, state Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Jagdish Vishwakarma, and state Agriculture Minister Jitu Vaghani are all expected to be present at the event.
Benefits for Farmers and Consumers
According to officials, the expanded infrastructure will allow the cooperative to process the entire milk procurement from dairy farmers across Gandhinagar district, with producers expected to receive more remunerative prices for their milk. Consumers will gain wider access to quality milk and a broader range of dairy products under the Madhur and Amul brands. The expansion will also boost manufacturing capacity for new dairy products for the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand.
From 6,433 Litres to 2.76 Lakh Litres: Madhur Dairy's Journey
Madhur Dairy was established on 6 February 1971 with the support of cooperative workers and just four milk societies. At inception, average daily milk procurement stood at 6,433 litres. That figure has grown steadily over five decades and currently averages 2.76 lakh litres per day during 2025-26. The cooperative's annual turnover has similarly expanded — from roughly ₹7 lakh at inception to nearly ₹628 crore today, according to estimates. Affiliated with GCMMF, Madhur Dairy has pursued multiple infrastructure projects and expansion initiatives in recent years as part of a long-term development strategy. With this latest addition, the cooperative is positioned to deepen its economic impact on milk producers across the district.
