New Delhi, April 6 (NationPress) Former MP and BJP leader Kirit Somaiya has lodged a police complaint concerning the alleged use of unauthorised loudspeakers at 72 mosques located in the Mankhurd Govandi area of eastern Mumbai, as confirmed by an official on Sunday.
The BJP leader submitted the complaint on Saturday during his visit to the vicinity under the jurisdiction of Shivajinagar Police Station, Govandi, referencing an RTI response that revealed 72 mosques operating loudspeakers without obtaining police permission.
He stated: "I have filed a formal complaint at the police station. Unauthorized loudspeakers have been installed on 72 mosques in Govandi without police approval. I have called for immediate action from the authorities on this matter."
For several months, Somaiya, a former Lok Sabha MP, has been addressing this issue and campaigning against illegal loudspeakers at mosques throughout various neighborhoods in Mumbai.
He contends that the excessive noise generated from these religious sites is not only a breach of the law but also poses a disturbance to residents living in proximity.
In a message shared on the social media platform X, Somaiya published a copy of the RTI response where the police confirmed the existence of illegal loudspeakers in the Shivajinagar Police Station area and nearby localities.
“Loudspeakers are being used illegally by 72 mosques in the Shivajinagar Police Station vicinity. Police permission has not been granted for any of these 72 mosques to utilize loudspeakers,” he remarked.
The RTI inquiry sought details regarding the number of mosques in the Deonar, Shivajinagar, and Tilaknagar police station areas that were using loudspeakers. It also inquired about how many mosques had received police authorization to use loudspeakers between January 1, 2024, and February 17, 2025.
The police response, signed by officers Bapurao Deshmukh, Mahesh Patil, Deepak Mahadik, and Vikrant Shide, stated: "No permission has been granted from Shivajinagar Police Station to set up loudspeakers on mosques during the specified timeframe in the application."
The police reply also clarified that no complaints had been filed during the designated period regarding the presence of loudspeakers on the 72 mosques in the Shivajinagar police station area or unauthorized loudspeakers being operated.
Additionally, the BJP leader has voiced concerns regarding the presence of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Maharashtra.
He claims to have investigated the issue from Akola to Latur and has articulated his concerns at numerous public forums.
Recently, he asserted to the media that intruders had acquired birth certificates in India using fraudulent Aadhaar cards, counterfeit documents, and false affidavits.
Somaiya’s call for action against the unlawful use of loudspeakers comes in the wake of similar actions taken by Uttar Pradesh police in Sambhal, where FIRs were filed against mosque imams for exceeding allowed noise levels.
Subsequently, in compliance with an Allahabad High Court directive on noise pollution control, authorities dismantled loudspeakers from the Shahi Jama Masjid and other mosques in Sambhal.
