Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren orders drinking water push amid heatwave
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Saturday, 23 May directed district administrations and government officials across the state to guarantee uninterrupted drinking water access for residents as the state battles a severe heatwave, with temperatures breaching 40 degrees Celsius in multiple districts.
Key Directives Issued
Soren issued instructions to Deputy Commissioners, Superintendents of Police, Station House Officers, Circle Officers, Block Development Officers, and Panchayat representatives to arrange drinking water at public places and outside government establishments. Officials were also directed to prominently display information about water facilities so pedestrians and citizens could easily locate them.
'In view of the continuously rising heat and heatwave conditions in Jharkhand, all officials must ensure proper arrangements for drinking water for the general public and prominently display information regarding the facilities so that pedestrians and other citizens can get relief,' Soren said in a post on social media platform X.
Tackling Water Scarcity on the Ground
The Chief Minister specifically ordered that water scarcity in affected areas be addressed without delay — through deployment of water tankers, repair of defunct hand pumps, and alternative supply arrangements wherever the regular network has failed. 'All Deputy Commissioners shall ensure that wherever there is a water crisis, immediate water supply through tankers, repair of hand pumps, and other alternative arrangements are made,' he said.
Soren stressed that no village, hamlet, or locality should face hardship due to a drinking water shortage. 'No village, hamlet or neighbourhood should face hardship due to shortage of drinking water — this is our collective responsibility. During this period of intense heat, the administration must work with complete sensitivity, promptness and a humane approach. Public interest is paramount,' he added.
Heatwave Conditions Across Jharkhand
Jharkhand has been enduring severe heatwave conditions over the past several days, with temperatures hovering above 40°C across several districts. The state government has issued heatwave warnings for at least six districts, while many areas have recorded temperatures nearly four degrees above normal. This comes amid a broader heat stress pattern affecting large parts of eastern and central India this season.
When Relief Is Expected
According to weather forecasts, some respite is likely towards the end of the month. Light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds is expected across parts of the state between 26 and 29 May. Until then, authorities have been put on high alert to manage public health and water supply simultaneously.
