Suicide Incident Involving JEE Aspirant from Haryana in Kota

Jaipur, Jan 8 (NationPress) A 19-year-old engineering aspirant has reportedly died by suicide, having hanged himself from a ceiling fan in his room in Kota, Rajasthan, police disclosed on Wednesday.
The individual, named Neeraj Jat, hailing from Mahendragarh, Haryana, was found lifeless in his hostel room at Anand Kunj Residency, situated in the Rajiv Gandhi Nagar area on Tuesday night. This area falls under the jurisdiction of the Jawahar Nagar police station.
The hostel proprietor discovered the body during a routine inspection and promptly notified the police as well as the student’s family.
As per Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) Dilip Saini, Neeraj had been preparing for the JEE exam in Kota for the last two years.
On Tuesday evening, Neeraj dined out with a friend and reportedly displayed no signs of distress. When he did not respond during the night attendance check, staff looked through a window of his room and found him hanging.
Neeraj had used a hook attached to the ceiling fan for the act. His body was transported to the mortuary at MBBS Hospital on Wednesday, with a postmortem scheduled to take place upon his family’s arrival, according to officials.
Hostel staff mentioned that Neeraj had gone out for dinner with a friend that evening and did not show any signs of stress.
This marks the first reported incident of student suicide in Kota for the year 2025.
Kota, recognized as a center for competitive exam preparation, experienced 17 suicide cases involving coaching students in 2024, in contrast to 26 cases in 2023.
Concerned by the rising trend, the former Gehlot administration established a committee in August 2023 to probe the underlying causes.
The committee identified several critical factors contributing to student suicides, including insufficient holidays or leisure time, separation from family, loss of confidence stemming from poor performance in coaching assessments, academic pressures, elevated parental expectations, as well as physical, mental, and academic stress. Additional issues such as financial difficulties, blackmail, and relationship troubles were also noted.
