Surat flood relief: ₹1.5 crore disbursed to 2,500 families in 2 days
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Surat district authorities have disbursed ₹1.5 crore in flood relief to 2,500 affected families within two days of the recent heavy rains, even as 50 survey teams continue assessments across six talukas of the city. Insurance companies have simultaneously been directed to fast-track compensation claims for traders whose commercial establishments were inundated.
Relief on the Ground
District Collector Tejas Parmar said survey teams were mobilised immediately after flooding caused damage across several parts of Surat city. The administration confirmed that cash doles and household assistance have already reached 2,500 families, with surveys still underway to identify remaining eligible beneficiaries.
'Due to flooding in Surat city, waterlogging in several areas caused damage. Immediate survey work was undertaken, and the process of disbursing cash doles and household assistance was started,' Parmar said. Families yet to be covered will receive assistance after verification is complete, he added.
Support for Flood-Hit Traders
Beyond household relief, the district administration has turned its attention to businesses that suffered losses after commercial establishments, shops, and industrial sheds were submerged. A meeting was held with insurance company representatives to ensure claims are processed without unnecessary delay.
'Insurance companies have been instructed to accept and settle all eligible claims as quickly as possible while ensuring claimants face the least possible inconvenience during the process,' officials said. A nodal officer has been appointed to coordinate between insurers, industries, and the trading community to facilitate smoother claim settlements.
Online Grievance Portal in the Works
Parmar also announced that an online grievance portal for traders and agencies will be launched shortly. Complaints submitted through the portal will be forwarded directly to the concerned insurance companies for resolution — a step aimed at cutting bureaucratic delays in post-disaster recovery.
Crackdown on Post-Flood Overcharging
The Collector issued a stern warning against exploitation of flood-affected residents, noting that the administration had received complaints of overcharging by automobile repair workshops, machinery repair shops, and grain retailers in the aftermath of the floods.
'This is a time to help one another, not to take advantage of people's hardships by charging higher prices,' Parmar said. He warned that any individual or business found charging excessive rates during the disaster period would face strict legal action.
With surveys ongoing and the grievance portal set to go live, the pace of relief disbursement in Surat is expected to accelerate in the coming days.
