Lucknow, March 2 (NationPress) A 17-year-old girl set herself on fire after reportedly being assaulted by a neighbor in her home located in Lucknow's Malihabad area. She has been admitted to the civil hospital in a critical condition, police stated on Sunday.
Officials revealed that the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Rahul, allegedly entered the girl's residence while she was alone and attacked her.
The victim's family asserted that Rahul fled the scene when she screamed for help. Overwhelmed by the incident, the girl tragically set herself ablaze “out of shame,” according to her family.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Lucknow, Vishwajeet Shrivastava, confirmed that a case has been filed against Rahul, and efforts are ongoing to locate him.
“Based on the complaint, FIR No. 56/2025 has been registered under sections 333/74/107/62 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and sections 7/8 of the POCSO Act at Malihabad police station. Further legal measures are being pursued, and the suspect is being sought,” the DCP mentioned.
The girl's father, a private driver, stated that he and his wife had gone to the hospital due to his ill health, leaving their daughter alone at home.
During this time, Rahul, a resident of their village, allegedly entered the home and assaulted her. In a fit of anger and trauma, the girl set herself on fire.
Upon hearing her screams, neighbors rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames. Her parents, after receiving the alarming news, hurried back from the hospital and took her immediately to the civil hospital.
Medical professionals have reported that she has sustained 60 percent burns and remains in a critical state.
The victim's family is demanding stringent action against the accused. Meanwhile, police continue their search efforts, and further investigations are in progress.
