Kolkata, Aug 17 (NationPress) A shocking incident of theft occurred at the Calcutta University Girls' Hostel, causing widespread fear among the residents. According to reports from the police, an unknown young man gained access to a female boarder's room and made off with her mobile phone and bag.
Feeling frightened by the event, Sayantani Chakraborty, a third-year student from the chemical engineering department, promptly notified the police on Sunday morning. This distressing incident transpired on Saturday night at the hostel located on Mahatma Gandhi Road in north Kolkata.
The student revealed that she was asleep on the third floor of the hostel when she was awakened by a noise.
"Upon checking, I discovered an intruder attempting to steal my belongings in the dark. My things were scattered everywhere. I quickly tried to apprehend him, but he overpowered me and escaped by climbing down a pipe," Chakraborty recounted.
Chakraborty, who studies at Rajabazar Science College, affiliated with the University of Calcutta, stated that no immediate action was taken after she alerted the hostel authorities.
"I informed the hostel superintendent and the college secretary about the incident, but no action was taken," she lamented. The student lost her mobile phone, a bag, and some cash during the incident.
This theft has raised serious questions regarding the security of the girls' hostel. Concerns are being voiced about how the intruder managed to enter the room unnoticed. The police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the hostel.
"An investigation is underway," stated an officer from the Amherst Street police station, where the report was filed.
On the other hand, Chhayarani Murmu, the hostel superintendent, refuted the claims made by Chakraborty.
She explained, "I inquired about the thief's whereabouts, and she mentioned he had fled. I searched the vicinity with the security guard. I advised her that it was too late to go to the police station, so we decided to go there in the morning. I didn’t have the police station's contact number, which is why I couldn't call the police officers."
In response to the incident, members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, organized a protest outside the hostel on Sunday morning, demanding enhanced security measures.
